Shantang Street
Shantang Street, also known as Seven-Li Shantang, is a historic canal-side street in Suzhou, China, dating back to 825 AD. Developed under the direction of Tang Dynasty poet and official Bai Juyi, the area became an important commercial and transportation route.
Today, visitors can stroll along narrow stone-paved lanes, admire traditional whitewashed houses, cross graceful stone bridges, browse local shops, and sample Suzhou-style snacks. The canal reflects the charm of traditional Jiangnan water towns, making this one of Suzhou’s most atmospheric historic districts.
The street is particularly enchanting in the evening, when red lanterns illuminate the traditional buildings and shimmer across the canal. Visitors can also take an optional boat ride for a different perspective of the old town.
